Chevrolet Spark (2010 – 2015) At A Glance

3/5

+Enjoyable and easy to drive. Easy to get in and out of. Decent engines. Good rear space. Good ride quality.

-Entry level models on small wheels don't look great. Not especially fun to drive.

The Spark replaces the Matiz - a particularly underwhelming car that was well past its best by the time its successor arrived. Thankfully the Spark is a much, much better car which manages to improve on its predecessor in every way that matters.

The styling is more up-to-date, with angular light clusters and neat, hidden door handles for the back doors – yes, it is a five-door car. The cabin is far more interesting than the old Matiz, too, with hardwearing, solid plastics where they're needed and nicer glossy materials for looks.

The drive is fine, too, although it's a stretch to call it anything more. The steering is nicely weighted, the gear change is adequately smooth and the handling is perfectly safe and sensible, although you wouldn't take it over a twisting mountain pass or out on a racetrack at any speed unless you were a masochist.

It's practical, with a tall cabin to give decent head room and more space in the back than you'd expect, given the tiny external dimensions. The boot is fine for a small weekly shop or a couple of suitcases, too, so there's little to fault with the Spark as an everyday car.

Chevrolet offers the choice of two engines – a 1.2 and a 1.0-litre. Both have four cylinders but the 1.2-litre offers better acceleration and more in-gear torque. Both are reasonably economical, too – the smaller engine offers 55mpg compared to 57mpg for the 1.2. Neither offers groundbreaking emissions, though – both are over 110g/km.

Best small/city car £4500?

"My girlfriend needs a small/city car to replace her ageing Ford Ka. She has £4000 to spend plus whatever she can get for her Ka (circa £500). I'm thinking of a 2012 Chevrolet Spark with around 10,000 miles. It seems cheaper than the Kia Picanto/Hyundai i10 and has the long balance of warranty. She needs something with low predicable running costs and reliability. Is the 1.2 worth an additional £500 over the 1.0? She drives 80 per cent city, 15 per cent country A-roads, 5 per cent motorway. Any other cars you think may suit?"

Not a bad idea. Nice little chain cam engines. The best ride quality of a car this size. Test and video here (in the snow): http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/chevrolet/chevrolet-spark-2010-road-test// Just remember that Chevrolet packs up in Europe in 2015 and that may affect the remaining warranty. Also worth checking out a Hyundai i10 1.2 (but not an i10 1.1).

Which city car should I buy?

"I bought a Chevrolet Spark from a main dealer (4 miles on clock and £3800 off list + great p/x on my car) a year ago and car has been no problem at all.I have now done 16,000 miles and will probably p/x for another make of citycar next year - is this wise or will depreciation take a bigger hit when Chevrolet pull out of UK market next year? Was thinking of new Vauxhall Viva or Adam/replacement Suzuki Splash or maybe a Renault Twingo - better to go for pre-owned Up/Hyundai 110 maybe? What do you think? "

No reason not to hang on to the Spark if you like it. Vauxhall dealers will take over servicing. Lot of choice in this category: C1, 108, Aygo, Up, Mii, Citigo, Picanto, i10, Panda, 500, Twingo, Celario (that's the replacement for the Alto and Splash).

We're pleased with our new Chevrolet Spark but why doesn't it have a spare wheel?

"We have recently acquired a new Chevrolet Spark 1.0. We are quite pleased with it, especially with the ride quality. It was a toss up between that and the Hyundai i10 1.2. I would have gone for the Hyundai, but as she is controlling the purse strings, who am I to argue? Chevrolet does not supply even a space saver spare wheel with the Spark, just a kit to inject gunge if a tyre gets punctured. We bought a full-size spare wheel and feel more comfortable knowing we will have one on a journey. We haven't a jack and tools and we'd call the AA to change a wheel if necessary."

I rate the Spark as having the best ride quality in its class and, like the i10, it comes with a 5-year warranty. You're right. No spare saves money and it can make a difference to the CO2 and therefore the tax. But they are usually offered as an accessory. I'd buy the tools as they're useful for other jobs, such as swapping the tyres around, checking the brakes, etc.

Should I purchase an extended warranty for our Chevrolet Matiz?

"The manufacturer's warranty on our Chevrolet Matiz 995cc model expires at the end of March. I was wondering if it is worthwhile buying a used car warranty as we intend to keep the car for another three years. I have had a quote through Warranty Direct of £703.38 for a three year warranty. My wife thinks this is a lot of money and I agree with her. I'm inclined to think that used car warranties are only worthwhile on high mileage cars. The total mileage since new is just under 20,000 and we expect a similar figure over the next three years. We have had the car since new and never had any problems with it. Do you think it is worth buying a warranty on a car that has this kind of annual mileage?"

WD premiums are based on perceived risk. I'd reckon that £700 for three years signifies quite a high risk for a small car, and this engine is belt cam, so it will need an expensive cambelt change anyway, at your expense. The later Chevrolet Spark has a more robust chain cam engine. What this all adds up to is a recommendation to swap the car rather than spend a lot of money on it and a warranty.

Firstly, it has the best back seat access of any small car. Your body simply inserts itself without any unnecessary bending. Front seats are easy too. So that's two benefits for retired people who are getting a bit stiff and whose friends are as well.

The back seat squabs yank over and the backrests fold flat, which is another advantage not shared by the likes of the Ford Fiesta. There are five proper three-point seatbelts, built into the seats, not the roof, making the back seat perfect for three small adults or children and the car rather more sensible for the school run than the usual Q7, XC90, Disco or X5. (It needs half the parking space.)

Sit in the driver's seat and you're confronted by a speedo flanked by a funky LED display showing engine revs, time of day, distance travelled and fuel left in the tank. That and the speedo both go up and down with the height-adjustable steering wheel, so you never lose sight of them. The rev counter isn't as easy to read at a glance as a traditional analogue clock, but it's not really a big issue.

Driving Chevrolet Spark (2010 – 2015)

  • Engines range from 1.0 to 1.2
  • Readers report Real MPG to be between 35–59 mpg

The little 1.0-litre engine produces 69PS and 93Nm of torque, which isn't a lot. Nonetheless it's a perfectly sweet little engine that settles down quietly at motorway speeds. It gives its best when pushed hard, owing to the fact peak torque and peak power arrive later in the rev range – but that's not great for fuel economy.  The 1.2-litre engine is similar in character to the 1.0-litre but has a bit more to give, making it a better choice for those who do more miles out of town and on A-roads.

Regardless of engine choice you get the same suspension set up, which is softer than the average modern small car – good news if you're surrounded by potholes. There is a disadvantage and that's a tendency to roll around when cornering at speed – but that ought to be no problem at all in and around town and would likely only pose issues to those who spend time on country lanes.

The major controls are all decent – steering isn't too light or too heavy and the gear change is smooth enough. However it can be tricky, at least first, to balance the throttle and clutch nicely when pulling away, so you might find yourself stalling until you get used to it.

What to watch out for

3-2-2015: Apparently bonnet catches of Chevrolet Sparks sold in Europe from 2009-2014 are prone to fail. Under certain conditions, corrosion may cause the secondary hood latch striker to stick in the open position. In case the primary latch is not engaged, the hood could open unexpectedly. The affected vehicles were manufactured with a secondary hood latch that may prematurely corrode at the latch pivot, causing the striker to get stuck out of position and preventing the striker from properly engaging the hood latch. GM is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities as a result of this condition.Customers will be notified in line with European legal requirements. Spark customers are advised to check the locking status of the hood prior to driving their vehicle. Contacts: Customers can visit Chevrolet's Customer Care page to find the phone number of your country's Chevrolet representatives. However, this is not on the UK VOSA recalls list: http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/searches/search.asp More here http://gmauthority.com/blog/2014/10/chevrolet-europe-announces-2009-20014-spark-recall/#ixzz3Qi9C8fih

Recalls

28-8-2012: R/2012/090: ABS may fail because incorrect brake fluid was used when the car was built causing corrosion. Recall to check the ABS and replace the brake fluid.

4-7-2014: Just-Auto.com alerted us to a Reuters report that GM will recall 27,051 Chevrolet Spark cars in South Korea due to a defective transmission mount. The gearbox mount may destabilise and cause a drop in transmission power, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement on 4-7-2014. The affected cars were produced in South Korea between 8-6-2013 and 12-12-2013, the ministry said. GM had voluntarily reported the defect to the Korean government, an official from the ministry told Reuters. The ministry had previously uncovered the same problem and had announced a recall of 4,848 Spark minis in January 2014, the official said. A GM Korea spokesman said there have been no reports of crashes or injuries arising from the defect.

4-10-2014: Just-Auto.com alerted us to NHTSA Recall No 14V-593, Manufacturer Recall No: 14456, date 23-9-2014 of 89,294 2013-2015 model year Chevrolet Spark cars in the US to fix a bonnet (hood) catch fault first identified in the UK. "The involved vehicles were manufactured with a secondary hood latch that may prematurely corrode at the latch pivot causing the striker to get stuck out of position and preventing the striker from properly engaging the hood latch," the NHTSA said. "If the secondary latch corrodes causing the striker to be stuck out of position, and the primary latch is not engaged, it is possible that the vehicle's hood may open unexpectedly. If the hood opened unexpectedly while the vehicle is being driven, the driver's vision will likely be impaired increasing the risk of a vehicle crash." NHTSA said GM Korea received a report in March this year of three incidents of secondary hood latches corroding prematurely on Chevrolet Spark Vehicles in the United Kingdom. In two of these three incidents, the vehicle hood opened while the customer was driving. In May, 2014, GM learned of an additional incident of a hood opening on a Chevrolet Spark while it was driving, which occurred in Denmark. During its investigation, GM discovered that the suspect secondary hood latch failed a 10-year component level corrosion test conducted in November 2013. As a result of that earlier failure, GM began investigating the cause of the secondary latch failure in November 2013. By February 2014, GM determined that the anti-corrosion coating applied to the secondary hood latch was deficient and did not meet GM's requirements. At the time of the failed test in November 2013, all secondary hood latches were coated with an ED coat (electro deposition of zinc phosphate) rather than the required MFC-A coat (a phosphate and oil based corrosion protection coat). The change to MFC-A coating was implemented on 31 July, 2014. GM's investigation revealed 10 warranty cases in the US with premature corroding of the secondary hood latches. Dealers will replace the striker and latch with a new part which has superior corrosion protection," NHTSA said.
